Assignment 1:
Single camera film making
Single camera film making is the process of filming a film by using only one camera to film the whole thing. By using one camera to film the whole film allows the production of the film to be creative.
Narrative structure
A flashback is an element of non - linear storytelling where the film maker portrays a memory or event that happened in the past. In the film 'Ray' the main character (Ray Charles) gas multiple flash backs to when he was younger to what his mother were to say to him. this is effective as it allows the viewer to connect with the character it also helps to tell the story better.
Realist
This production style is mainly seen on tv, where programmes are made to look as close to 'real' life as possible. This includes programmes such as soaps and other TV dramas. This genre of film making stemmed from ' kitchen sink' dramas that appeared on TV in the 1960's. For example This is England is a realistic TV programme which is based around the lives of a group of young men going about their everyday lives. This includes the actors dressing similar to teenage boys use to dress, they would also use the same language. The programme is set at a council house state to make the programme seem as real as possible.
Anti - Realist
Slightly different to surrealism, this style works outside the boundaries of what could happen in real life, and therefore its drawing attention to the artifice of film production.
Endings
Closing endings is where the narrative threads have mainly been completely resolved, learning little or no ambiguity as to what happened. this is commonly seen in series, for example in sherlock, the case is usually solved by the end of the episode. Another example is Silent witness in the series the audience is guessing who the murder is all the way through the series until the end where we find out who it is. In the clip we watched it we found out that the wife killed his husband however she made the audience feel sorry for her so they didn't see her as that bad of a person.
Open endings is where not all narrative threads have been resolved completely. For example in Eastenders the audience were left on a cliff hanger as to who shot phil mitchell. This makes the viewer to carry on watching the programme for weeks just to see who it was.

Non - linear narrative
This is the story of Humpty Dumpty but instead of the kings and horses trying to mend Humpty, he has a flash back to when his mum told him not to ever go on the wall because he will fall off and die. At the end of the story he then imagines his mum standing over him saying I told you so.
What is Diegetic and non - diegetic sound?
Diegetic sound comes from inside the world of film and is something the characters can hear. For example gun shots.
Non- diegetic the source comes from outside the world of film and the characters can not hear it. For example a soundtrack played over the top of a film.

Analytical writing - Bates motel
The scene starts of with a Non-Diegetic sound track which through out the scene becomes less happy and more of a serious soundtrack.
Emma the girl on the swing has a rare lung disease and finds it hard to breathe without her tank. At the beginning of the scene you see Norman (the boy who saved her) friend telling Emma just to give the swing ago and Emma telling everyone that she would like to give to give it go as she doesn't get opportunity to get to do things like that very often. As the reviewer you then get a sense of urgency when the background music becomes more serious and when Emma doesn't come up from the water and Norman has to jump in to try and save her.
The music makes the viewer feel as if Emma isn’t going to be alive after she jumps in the water. Also at the end of the clip when Norman is shouting at his friend the music again builds up to create more tension to help the viewer see more clearly how angry/serious Norman is.
Diegetic the actors will be able to hear the water, Emma screaming having fun, the movement of the rope swing and the wind in the trees behind them.

Mise-en-scene
This is a scene of Margot Tenenbaums from the film The royal Tenenbaums. This clip is a mise-en-scene because everything in the clips of Margot is there for a purpose and to show the viewer a certain connate to help set the scene. In this clip it shows Margot being very secretive about smoking from a young age as she is smoking on the roof where no one will see her. She is also doing it with a don't care attitude as the viewer we can tell thats how she is feeling by her facial expression, body language and her choice of outfit. The shot is also a wide shot so we can easily tell that she is on the roof, the scene is also very well lit to make it more obvious that Margot is outside.

Assignment 2: Planning a Single Camera Production
Analysing an Opening Sequence
Pretty Little liars genre is teen Drama, mystery, crime fiction and a thriller. You can tell that the show is all of these genres by the way the girls are all standing by a coffin looking very secretive. They look very secretive as they are all looking in opposite directions from one another and they do not look sad they look kind of angry almost as if they want to know who killed the person in the coffin. The show is based on a little town called rosewood. You can tell that the show is based in a small town as in the background of the opening sequence the is a fence and house almost like they are in someones back garden this also links to the idea of the show being a mystery murder as it is hinting at the audience that they do not know who killed the person in the coffin. All the characters all seemed to have the same attitude in the opening sequence as they all have the same body language and same facial expression. They all come across as very determined to find out who killed the person in the coffin and why they did what they did. They also look annoyed, frustrated and a little bit scared. This could suggest to the viewer that they are getting black mailed by the person in the coffin maybe.
In the first 10 seconds of the opening sequence the viewer would be able to see that the girls are making their friend (the girl in the coffin) look pretty. For example you are shown them Putting mascara on her, Putting lipstick on her, doing her shoes up, Curling her hair, painting her nails, crossing her arms and finally closing her eyes which are all dolled up before the coffin shuts. This makes it more clear that the girls dolling her up that they are in fact close friends. Rest of the clip is just four girls looking round looking confused, scared, etc. Before Aria the character at the end mouth "shh" to the camera when raising her arm.
