Assignment 1: Purposes of a music video
Promotional purposes
A music video can promote a song and the artist in many ways so they remain in the public eye. For example one directions music video for ‘night changes’ shows each member of the popular boy band going on individual dates where it appears as through the viewer, which gives the impression that the audience is sharing an intimate moment with each member of the band. By using this point of view camera shot instantly puts there viewer in to the video which then encourages them to become absorbs in the moment. This appeals to their target audience as the majority of their viewers are young females. Each one of the boys are shown to be caring, fun-loving, romantic and the perfect date for the viewers. By making a music video like this ensures that the boy band are kept in the public eye as it feeds the fan bases fantasies and desires. For the band and it gives the impression that the audience now know each one of the boys on an intimate level. In contrast to this, Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Baseline junkie’ creates a completely different persona. In the music video it shows Dizzee rascal and comedian friend, Eric Lampert preaching 'the way of the bassline' . They first visit a block a of flats, where Dizzee aggressively threatens a small boy after he turns of the large speakers that Dizzee is holding which is playing the song 'bassline junkie' through. From there Dizzee and Eric get in a taxi where they use a public address system to play the blast the song out to the public. they then visit a prison, where they show the prisoners some sort of public service announcement type of video to 'cleanse' the prisoners. they also 'cleanse' a man in a pub. They both then visit a church, where Dizzee is dressed like a priest giving a sermon and Eric playing an organ where all its keys tapped of part from the bass notes. This sends everyone in the church into a dance frenzy where they start to tear their clothes off. finally, Dizzee’s finally uses ' the way of the bassline' to set a man on fire. The purpose of this music video was to help people get off drugs, this then puts Dizzee in a positive light in the publics eye as he is doing something good. which can also help promote Dizzee as people hear his positive message and may listen to some of his other songs gaining in more views. A music video can also help promote the artist as a individual. An example of a song getting recognition due to its music video would be Miley Cyrus music video for ‘wrecking ball’. where in the video Miley Cyrus is shown to be riding a wrecking ball in very little clothes. What then made everyone talk about it as it was it something we haven't seen before.
Synergy
Media synergy is the combined working together of two or more parts of a system so that the combined effect is greater than the individual parts themselves. e.g. A film may come out as well as the game for it. Its important for musicians to use media synergy as it helps to promote themselves and helps them. It benefits both the record company and the media gaming side as they both are making a profit. An example of this would be that sony pictures entertainment’s sky falls was released the same time as the sony-owned soundtrack CD. Also ill manors film was released the same time as Plan B’s CD and soundtrack to help increase views and profit. another example would be that sony electronics released a new tv and new adverts featured sky fall when when promoting it and the DVDs were promoted on the sky fall or ill manors website.

What makes a good music video?
Some genres of music are suited to different styles/ conventions of music videos. A good music video would either be narrative which means that the music video will contain some sort of story line or event. Or a performance video which means the music video has footage of an artists performing; either live, in a studio or as part of a choreographed scene. A good music video should also be either an illustrative music video witch means the music video is one which will use the literal lyrics as a basis for the visuals. The visuals and the lyrics will have a strong bond for example Eminem song 'Stan' follows a clear story line of an obsessive fan . Or interpretive which is a music video what encourages the audience to speculate as to deeper meaning of the song, by using a narrative which is not lifted literally from the lyrics, and the bond between the two will not be immediately obvious for example Katy Perry's music video for 'firework'. A good music video can also be surreal which means having the qualities of surrealism; bizarre. For example the chemical brothers music video for 'let forever be' is a very surreal music video to make the viewer want to carry on watching it. A good music video can also be a homage for example a tribute. A tribute is an act, statement, or gift that is intended to show gratitude, respect, or admiration. Just like the band Muse they did a tribute for the film doctor strange love. They didn't write a song about the film to help promote it , they wrote a song to because they liked the movie. In the music video the show it shows a scene from the film where everyone is sat round the table with the band singing round them. Another type of good music video would be pastiche which is a copy of style. Two examples of this would be Madonna music video for the song 'vogue' and the music video for Lady Gaga. Pastiche is a work of art that imitates the style of some previous work.
